Abstract We briefly review the recent progress of theories and experiments on spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM)-coupled quantum gases. The coupling between intrinsic degree freedom particles their external orbital motions widely exists in universe leads to a broad variety fundamental phenomena both classical physics mechanics. realization synthetic SOAM cold atoms has attracted great deal attention stimulated large amount considerations exotic phases Bose Fermi In this review, we present basic idea engineering neutral atoms, starting from semiclassical description atom-light interaction. Unique features single-particle presence are discussed. intriguing ground-state weakly interacting gases introduced, with emphasis so-called angular stripe phase, which not yet been observed at present. It is demonstrated how generate stable giant vortex SOAM-coupled superfluid. also discuss topological characters superfluid coupling. then introduce experimental achievement $$^{87}$$ 87 Rb its first observation phase transitions. most development summarized. Regarding controllability ultracold gases, it opens new era, simulation point view, study resulting as well newly emergent phases.
